PURPOSE OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES SPECIALTY GROUP:

To foster pure and applied geographic research and geographic education that involves the indigenous peoples of the world, past and present. To encourage approaches to research and teaching that empower indigenous peoples, and to help build relationships of mutual trust between communities of indigenous peoples and academic geographers.

Renee Pualani Louis and Zoltán Grossman
Co-Chairs, Indigenous Peoples Specialty Group
of the Association of American Geographers (AAG)
March 2009

With recent concerns over the conduct of geographers working in Indigenous communities, the co-chairs of the Indigenous Peoples Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) provide this discussion paper concerning standards for research by geographers in Indigenous communities.

The Indigenous Peoples Knowledges and Rights Commission of the International Geographical Union. The mission of this organization is

• To create a network within geography which allows Indigenous and non-Indigenous geographers working with and for Indigenous communities to share their research and experiences with each other and the discipline as a whole.

• To encourage and mentor young scholars, particularly Indigenous scholars, in pursuing geography as a career.

• To encourage and foster geographic research for and with Indigenous communities with the long-range goal of bringing the research needs of these communities to the attention of the discipline.

The Indigenous Issues Study Group of the Institute of Australian Geographers. "The Indigenous Study group is designed to provide a forum for geography students, academics and practitioners who work with Indigenous people and related issues. The study group is fairly new and is developing ways to encourage dialogue about the many methodological, ethical, and research issues that arise from working with Indigenous communities."
