jrice@ou.edu. Moving Between Worlds: American Indian Migrations. The American Indian population of today reflects a history of upheavals in its geographic distribution. Between 1930 and 1990, the minority group that experienced the greatest degree of urbanization was not African Americans, as is commonly thought, but rather American Indians. Even so, the Indian population remains one of the least urbanized in American society. This study investigates the history and nature of American Indian urbanization by exploring their migration from historical homelands to reservations, from reservations to urban areas, and the cyclical movement back to and between those reservations and cities that sometimes occur.
