Indigenous People Re-defining Themselves: The Case of the Scottıs Valley PomoThe ancestors of the Scotts Valley band of Pomo Indians have inhabited Lake County California for thousands of years. The tribe was heavily impacted by early European contact, as well as by changing US Governmental policies. This project reconstructs the historical/geographical context of tribal lands, and traces recent events that have allowed the tribe to re-establish its tribal government after destruction by the termination act. The project also includes interviews with contemporary tribal members in which members were asked to evaluate the contemporary tribal situation with reference to past experiences. Interviews were conducted with both male and female tribal members from two generations, and were unedited, in an effort to let tribal members speak with their own voice.
