Julie Weinert, The Ohio State University Local gender structures in ecotourism in Ecuador I plan to study local gender structures in ecotourism destinations to demonstrate how these structures provide conditions for the functioning of a global ecotourism industry. I will conduct a comparative study of two areas in Ecuador that serve as ecotourism destinations. Mestizo peoples, along the coast in a national park, populate the first area, and the second area of interest, in the eastern rainforest, is where indigenous Quichiua groups live. My project will explore how diverse local structures, the tourist gaze, and national and international tourism providers’ expectations of communities in ecotourism destinations converge to govern the processes affecting the entire ecotourism industry.
