GIS and Indigenous People
Session Description:
The panel will discuss various issues associated with the use or potential use of geographic information systems by and for indigenous people. Some specific topics will include the potential roles of the BIA in the development of tribal GISs; the benefits and consequences of using GI technologies (GIS, remote sensing, GPS, etc.) on Indigenous land rights, land claims and use, and community resource planning; land-related issues for indigenous people in Latin America; the influence of social interactions, organizational context and technology on indigenous GIS; and how indigenous concepts of landscape can be identified and then integrated with other GIS data.
