2446: Political Ecologies of Knowledge, Science and technology III: hybrid knowledge and nature constructions

Wednesday, 3/8/06, from 1:00 PM - 2:40 PM

Session Description:
Political ecology, as a theoretical framework and methodological tool set, is greatly enhanced by drawing on the insights of STS (Science and Technology Studies) scholarship to better articulate the relations between not only nature and society but also science and nature, science and society, and science and 'other' knowledge articulations -- across various overlapping scales and contexts. Papers in this session combine the critical theoretical vision of political ecology with methodological tools from STS, to question the very lines along which the debates (analytical and political) over nature and society are expressed. Through a series of case studies they show how the boundaries between nature, society, science, and culture, are blurred in conservation, development, and restoration projects, and bring into question the nexus of legitimacy regarding environmental knowledge/practice.
