3234: Indigenous Agency: Place, Identity, and Local Action
Thursday, 3/9/06, from 10:00 AM - 11:40 AM
Session Description:
This session examines four case studies of indigenous communities reacting to issues from outside. In each case, the peoples involved have taken active roles in shaping policies and in place-making. These cases explore the richness of indigenous responses to outside forces, showing the depth of cultural institutions and the strength of indigenous identities to cope with external forces of change. Each points out indigenous peoples as agents in reforging their identities and in tackling challenges posed by a changing world.
