3431: Indigenous Methodologies: Reconciling Academic Paradigms with Indigenous Practices I
Thursday, 3/9/06, from 1:00 PM - 2:40 PM
Session Description:
In the last few years, academic research of Indigenous issues has spawned several conferences and critical discussions of culturally appropriate research strategies. Conventional academic scholarship and practices are being challenged by indigenous scholars seeking validation of their cultural knowledge systems. Academic scholarship must keep pace if it is to remain relevant to indigenous communities and societies in the 21st century. These sessions intend to provide scholars an opportunity to locate themselves within a range of intellectual debates on research methods and academic practices evolving in indigenous communities. The purpose of this session is to get things started with a series of presentations by students engaged in developing research-based responses to the real-world struggles of indigenous peoples. They will address any number of the following issues:Indigenous priorities and the academic dilemma in the research process, Indigenous epistemologies and the knowledge economy, Transforming academic paradigms, Cultural identity, resistance and research, New frontiers of knowledge Global economy, Culture and the role of academic scholarship, and Intellectual property rights of indigenous knowledge
