3664: Making and Moving Indigenous Video in Latin America

Session Description:
Central to the Zapatista movement is the moral encouragement and financial aid of international agencies, NGOs, committed individuals and other actors that Subcomandante Marcos refers to as the Zapatista's "third shoulder." One such ally is the Chiapas Media Project/Promedios de Comunicación Comunitaria (CMP/Promedios). Established in 1998, CMP/Promedios remains focused on its mission of equipping Zapatista communities to produce their own visual media. Determined to eventually hand-over a self-perpetuating project to the Zapatistas, CMP/Promedios has set up media centers equipped with various communication technologies, satellite internet access, and trained community members in four of the five Zapatista administrative centers (caracoles). The organization's website (www.promedios.org) lists the diverse catalogue of videos that have been produced by, and in conjunction with, the Zapatistas. Topics range from the recent restructuring of the Zapatista system of governance to fair trade and women's collectives.
During this viewing-screening session, Alex Halkin founder and current coordinator of CMP/Promedios will introduce the organization and two of the almost thirty videos it has produced. And after screening these two videos, she will draw on her extensive experience to field questions about the making and moving of indigenous video in Latin America. The goal of this session is to promote the appreciation and use of indigenous video as a source of alternative, and yet authoritative, geographic knowledge.
