4519: Tourism and Service Delivery in Indigenous Areas
Friday, 3/10/06, from 4:00 PM - 5:40 PM
Session Description:
This session looks at two aspects of service industries in indigenous areas: the delivery of social services, and the effects of tourism as a service industry. Both issues have spatial and social factors affecting--and affected by--contemporary indigenous populations and their lifestyles. Case studies consider social support systems, the provision of essential services, impacts of engaging with tourism as a response to an environmental crisis, and the landscapes of tourism as experienced by indigenous people themselves. These case studies draw on field research from Western Australia, Canada, and Egypt. They thereby provide a geographical and thematic range of material to address the larger issues of social services and service industries in indigenous areas, combining structural forces with local realities.
