The Sea
Chapter Contents:

Seaside
Introduction and orientation to the shoreline and offshore locations of Nu‘uanu. Reefs, bays and beach locations. Life by the sea here was intimately linked with the emergence of Honolulu as the major harbor for the Hawaiian Islands.

Beaches
There's not much beach left at the Honolulu waterfront, but there are vitally important waterfront activities. The creation of Sand Island has added a recreation area offshore of Nu‘uanu.

On The Reef
Explore the development of the offshore shallows. Through two centuries of modifications, this offshore area has served a wide range of purposes. Today Sand Island occupies this area.

Fishing
Despite the predominance of commercial traffic and the occasional cruise ship, Honolulu is still a center of fishing in the Islands. Whether small-time or large scale, fishing is still found here.

Language
Zones of the sea extending out from the shore; fishing and fishing grounds; waves and tides.
