Guardian Dogs
The story of guardian dogs at Kapena Falls, who tried to warn travelers not to go up Nu‘uanu Valley; and the story of a fat young dog who was killed, cooked, and packed up to be given as tribute to the King. But this was no ordinary dog, with no ordinary friends.

Pohaku-a-Umeume
This rock is the focus of an ancient battle between two groups of menehune. The Pohaku-a-umeume is also of historical significance to the birth of chiefs.

Waipuhia
One of the two guardian maidens from the story of Ke-ao-melemele, Waipuhia has another story as well. This one draws from Raphaelson's "The Kamehameha Highway."

Na Pohaku Kia‘i (Guardian Stones)
A pair of once-famous stones near the Pali both guarded travelers and received the piko (naval cords) of infants. Just over the other side, a priest or mo‘o posted to guard the Nu‘uanu trail from trespassing hula maidens was turned to stone.

Other Storied Places
There are many other historical and legendary places in Nu‘uanu, too small to warrant their own separate treatment. An interactive map is presented for exploring these special places.
