Organization Description (as defined in the corporate bylaws):

This corporation is organized solely for scientific, literary and educational purposes, including for such purposes, the making of distributions to other organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States. Specifically the purposes of the organization are as follows:

a. To document the traditions of the Native Hawaiian culture and of other local cultures in the Hawaiian Islands;

b. To support creative and artistic talent on the island of Hawaii;

c. To produce, perform for the public, publish and distribute to the general public documentary or artistic productions in various media, including print, videotape or audiotape, CD-Rom, which will enhance purposes (a) and (b) above;

d. To promote the archival preservation of works produced by us, and of original materials (e.g. tapes and photos) used in our productions;

e. To acquire financial resources to carry out purposes (a) through (d) above, by means of fund-raising, acquisition of grants, and/or sale of media products to the general public.

No part of the net earnings of the corporation shall inure to the benefit of, or be distributable to its directors, officers, or other private persons, except that the corporation shall be authorized and empowered to pay reasonable compensation for services rendered, and to make payments and distributionsin furtherance of the purposes set forth above. No substantial part of the activities of the corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation or pariticipate in any political campaign on behalf of a candidate for public office. Notwithstanding any other provision herein, the corporation shall not carry on any other activities not permitted to be carried on (a) by a corporation exempt for Federal Income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States or (b) by a corporation, contributions to which are deductible under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.


Pili Productions Projects, from 1997 to 2002: "Local Experience, Local Talent"

Pili Productions is based in Hilo, Island of Hawai`i and primarily carries out projects which describe local culture on that island, either through creative writing or through ethnographic description.

1. Video production of Kau La‘au and Ma‘ama‘a: traditional Hawaiian ulua fishing: filming of ulua fishermen from Kalapana, begun 1997 in Kalapana and Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park on Hawai`i Island, project ongoing.

2. Big Island Creative Writing Contest: entries were accepted in Spring 1999 and cash prizes were awarded in Fall 1999.

3. Reprinting of Emma Kauhi's book, He Mo`olelo no Kapa`ahu/Story of Kapa`ahu: describes her childhood growing up in Puna, Hawai`i Island, between 1916 and 1935; reprinted for Pili Productions in Summer 2000, readings by Emma Kauhi held in Fall 2000.

4. Preparation of book Mmmh...`Ono by Eleanor Ahuna: she describes fishing and camping in her childhood in Keaukaha, Hawai`i Island, in the 1930s; project ongoing.

5. Pacific Worlds Website and Teacher's Guide: pilot project for a website to describe Pacific Islands geography in terms of native conceptualization; the pilot project describes Ha‘ena ahupua‘a on Kaua‘i; created by RDK (Doug) Herman with Carlos Andrade, Fall 2000.
