Chapter Contents:

People
Not too many new people are moving into Tanapag, but the changing population dynamics on Saipan are affecting the village.

Village
Many changes have taken place in the village since most of our guides were young. We learn about the impact of the homesteading program, and about some of the structures that have been built.

Community
The sense of community in Tanapag has been severely challenged by modernization and American values. But community leaders met this challenge by forming the Tanapag Action Group and getting involved.

Re-planting
There are two means by which cultural values are being plowed back into the community. First is the impact of Carolinian voyagers sailing to Saipan. The second is a proposal to manage turtles for cultural use.

Sacred Sites
The Tanapag community has plans to rebuild the utt, reflecting the impact of the Carolinian voyagers and the urge to perpetuate the culture. Our guides also discuss the sacredness of Managaha.

Farewell
Our guides offer some closing thoughts as we bid farewell to Tanapag and to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Language
Basic terminology regarding sacred geography and progress.
