Arrival
Chapter Contents:

Come Ashore
Land your canoe at the dock at Tanapag. Our guides tell the story of how the people of Tanapag came to reside there, and from where they came .

The Ancients
Long before the Carolinians came and established Tanapag, the Chamorro people lived in the Mariana islands. Scott Russell and Noel Quitugua tell us about ancient Chamorro culture.

Legendary Setting
Because of the displacement of the Chamorros from the Mariana Islands by the Spanish so long ago, most of the ancient legends are lost. Here we learn both Chamorro and Carolinian stories about the naming of Saipan, as well as more on the Carolinian voyaging and naming of the Mariana Islands.

Neighbors
Rosa Castro and Ben Sablan tell us about the villages of Matansa (San Roque) and Garapan, and their relationship to Tanapag, as well as the naming of Saipan villages after Catholic Saints.

Language
Basic terminology relating to Land, Sea, Cosmos; Directions; Navigation; and welcoming phrases.
