The Sea
Chapter Contents:

Seaside
As a fishing village, Kawaihae was perched next to the sea where its residents could easily access the ocean. Fishing nets and boat houses lined the shores. Here also was a fish pond and salt pans. Gathering of coastal sea products is discussed on extra pages.

Beaches
Kawaihae was by all accounts a beautiful beach, and the residents remember it well as a site for fishing, picnics and camping. Papa talks about the names of different locations along the shore. Gathering on the beach is discussed.

On the Reef
The Big Island has very little reef on account of its young geological age. But there is reef in Kawaihae, and here the community fished and gathered wana, a type of sea urchin.

Fishing
Lala explains about aku fishing and traditional ‘opelu fishing. Many additional pages elaborate different aspects of fishing, fishing grounds, and the preparation of fish for drying.

Language
Zones of the sea; waves and tides;
fish and fishing.
