People
Nuuanu has attracted residents since the earliest days of the
Hawaiian Kingdom. While the valley remains home to many foreign consulates,
a number of churches have also made their homes here. Kalani
discusses the impact of visitors to the area. |
|
Ahupuaa
Despite the legacy of change and urbanization in Nuuanu and in
Hawaii generally, Stephen discusses a vision for a modern
ahupuaa. |
|
Community
Because of its many historical and sacred sites associated with the
Hawaiian royal families, Nuuanu is the focus of a number of community
efforts. Some are working to maintain the sanctity of these sites, while
others are focused on the larger issue of Hawaiian sovereignty. |
|
Re-Planting
Nuuanu will probably never return to major taro production. Stephen
discusses other modes of restoration, and of care for the environment,
that would maintain the integrity of the ahupuaa ideal
and move Nuuanu into a productive future. |
|
Sacred Sites
The homes of the Hawaiian royalty, a host of heiau and other
sacred sites, and the scene of the Battle of Nuuanu fill this
valley with sacred spaces. Many of these are being protected and preserved
for present and future generations. Ancient Hawaiian protocols are being
resurrected, and the valley rings with chanting. |
