Chapter Contents:

Old ‘Oahu

Old O‘ahu
Jim Bartels explains the traditions of O‘ahu, with the ruling chiefs and the battles and events that preceded Kamehameha's conquest of the Island.

Battle of Nu'uanu

The Battle of Nu‘uanu
Perhaps the most famous event in Hawaiian history, this battle culminates at the pali of Nu‘uanu, where the defeat of the O‘ahu forces assures Kamehameha's sovereignty over the island, making it inevitable that he would unite all the islands into one kingdom.

Pohukaina

Pohukaina
A little-known but highly sacred site on the grounds of ‘Iolani Palace, Pohukaina was the burial place of the Hawaiian chiefs. Jim Bartels and Puakea Nogelmeier share the legends surrounding this site.

'Iolani Palace

‘Iolani Palace
Kamehameha and his successors take up residence in Honolulu, where their magnificent grass houses soon give way to Western-style buildings. JIm Bartels gives a history of ‘Iolani Palace and its symbolic role for the Hawaiian monarchs.

Kaniakapupu

Kaniakapupu
Kamehameha III, whose reign was the longest and in some ways most important of the successors to the throne, established a summer residence high in Nu‘uanu Valley. Here, away from Western influence, he maintained his Hawaiian traditions.
